Black Cohosh 1000mg (Cimicifuga racemosa)
A scientifically supported approach to alleviating adverse symptoms of the menopause
Mild to moderate forms of Adverse Menopausal Symptoms (AMS) affects a larges majority of women, with up to 30% of sufferers describing their symptoms as severe. AMS can lead to a significant reduction in the quality of a woman's life and in the very least, cause much discomfort and distress.
The orthodox treatment for AMS invariably includes hormone replacement therapy (HRT), although many women concern themselves regarding the side effects and risks associated with this line of therapy. The good news is that there is an alternative; the herb Black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) is a scientifically supported approach to alleviating AMS.
Hailed as a phytoestrogen, Black cohosh has been shown in pre-clinical studies to possess mild oestrogen-antagonist effects. This means that although the herb cannot elicit a full oestrogen like effect on the body, it is able to bind to oestrogen receptors without actually activating the receptor, unlike synthetic oestrogens (oestrogen-agonists that bind to and activate receptors for oestrogen). This effect may account for the reduced levels of gonadotrophin, luteinising hormone (LH), that have been observed both in pre-clinical studies as well as human investigations.
There are no indications in any of the literature of any serious adverse effects associated with the correct use of Black cohosh. As a precautionary measure, many practioners choose not to recommend Black cohosh for those suffering with oestrogen dependent tumours (e.g. some forms of breast cancer). Black cohosh is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women, but can be used safely alongside other herbal and nutritional supplements.
